Scuba diving is one of those things that interest a lot of people but which relatively few people actually take up. Some people will even go so far as to try to sign up for a scuba diving excursion on their tropical vacation before realizing they need to attend classes and get a diving certification. It’s kind of like sky-diving in that way. Not everybody loves the idea. Some people are downright terrified of the water and especially of being submerged. Likewise, other people are afraid of heights and falling. But it’s the middle ground of people who are interested but need that extra push to take the plunge and make it happen.
We want to say it’s definitely worth it for everyone and in every case, but of course, if you don’t live near a major body of water, then it’s going to take some time and money to enjoy even an annual or semiannual scuba diving trip. On the other hand, it’s not like you must go out every year to eventually make the commitment pay off. It’s also true that U.S. diving destinations, while perhaps not the most world-famous spots, are underrated as a whole. Paired with a visit to the Caribbean, Australia, and/or South America, you can quickly find other diving opportunities along each of the major U.S. coastlines (and Hawaii):
